ABOUT US

The Office of the Pension Funds Adjudicator (OPFA) is a statutory body established to resolve disputes in a procedurally fair, economical, and expeditious manner. The adjudicator’s office investigates and determines complaints of abuse of power, maladministration, disputes of fact or law and employer dereliction of duty in respect of pension funds. The OPFA was established in terms of the Act as amended, to dispose of pension fund related complaints lodged in terms of the Act and complaints designated to the Adjudicator in terms of section 211 of the FSR Act.

USEFUL LINKS

The Ombud Council was established under Chapter 14 of the Financial Sector Regulation Act (2017). Its goal is to help financial customers access affordable, effective, independent, and fair alternatives to resolve disputes with financial institutions. The Ombud Council does not handle customer complaints directly. Instead, it oversees all financial sector ombud schemes, including the OPFA...

The OPFA handles complaints about funds registered under the Pension Funds Act No. 24 of 1956. However, the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) is not registered under this Act, accordingly the OPFA does not handle GEPF complaints. The Government Employees Pension Ombud Office (GEPO) handles GEPF related complaints. For more information on how to complain about the GEPF, click below.

An unclaimed benefit is pension money that hasn’t been paid to a former employee or beneficiary within 24 months after was due and payable, as required by the fund rules and the Pension Funds Act No. 24 of 1956. The Financial Sector Conduct Authority maintains a central database to help the public find their unclaimed benefits. If you want to check for unclaimed benefits, click below.
